Painting 2: Post 9

For my final painting in the class, I decided to do a portrait on one of my 3D surfaces. I went with a picture of Yung Humma, who is also in the Turquoise Jeep rap group with Flynt Flossy. I wanted this one to out do the first one. I am really happy with how it turned out.

Here is an in progress shot of it.

And it actually did end up out doing the first one of Turquoise Jeep. In only a day it is at 448 likes. That is pretty exciting!

Here are some photos from the side angles to see more of the 3D effect it has.

Painting 2: Post 8

I finally finished my pixelated painting of my grandpa. I decided to ditch the exact pixels that I generated in photoshop and instead create my own pixels based off those from the computer. I am pretty happy with how this one turned out. It is a nice little painting.

This is what I decided on for the 3D triangle shape I made. I am not entirely sold on this being finished but it is complete for the time being. I like the way the tone gradient looks on the different planes of the shape.

This is the direction I decided to go on with the texture study piece. It was going to be a painting of Audrey Hepburn, but I think I am going to go over it and continue in the abstract direction. I don't like the way the texture works with the figure. Also the shape is too strange for a portrait I think.

I started to lay out what I thought might look cool on this one. It is a scene from an old photo of my brothers playing baseball with my grandma. But I decided the image is not the right fit for this surface. So I am going to try and find something to better match it.

Painting 2: Post 7

I decided to do a painting of the online comedy rapper Flynt Flossy on my latest 3D canvas. My friend talked me into it because we have been watching his videos a lot in the studio. It seemed like a fun light hearted painting idea so I decided to go for it.

Here is an in progress shot of the painting with my reference material.

And here is the finished piece. This painting actually went really quick. I think it is partially because I had fun painting it. And it is a pretty simple image.

I am pretty happy with the way it turned out. I posted it onto twitter and tagged Flynt's rap group Turquoise Jeep in it and they retweeted it and put it on their instagram also. It reached 180 likes last I checked.
It was pretty exciting to see my work on the group's account getting lots of attention.

Painting 2: Post 6

Sara Pedigo showed me another artist named Hilary Wilder. She some paintings that incorporate the space of the gallery they are displayed in and she builds shelves and ads those into her paintings. They show some similarities to the work I have been doing this semester, except I feel like her work is a million times better than mine. She does amazing abstract paintings that look like their own worlds and giant explosions and stuff. They are amazing her use of color is so rich and vivid. http://www.hilarywilder.com/

My work has been coming along okay. There were snags in whether or not I wanted to continue 3D paintings or what to use as subject matter but I still think I want to continue with them. I made this small triangular wood canvas  and a flat wood piece that I put thick paint on as a texture study mostly.

I also built this wooden surface to paint on using small pieces of wood all glued together. I like the textures of the wood and the look of them all pieced together.

Painting 2: Post 5

-I was having trouble trying to figure out which direction I wanted to go in. Whether or not I wanted to continue to work on the 3D surfaces or not. After the critique last week I have decided to continue in the 3D direction. I am almost finished putting together a new surface to paint on. It will be in a triangular shape rather than square. I have gotten a lot of feedback saying that these pieces would look interesting in other shapes so I thought that might help spark more interest in them.
-There is an artist name Shintaro Ohata who does some really nice 3D paintings, where he has the figures done sculpturally in front of painted backgrounds. They are very interesting and look great. I might want to work on something similar to that. http://yukari-art.jp/en/shintaro_ohata_en

「ひこうき」部分/ ''Airplane''detail, 2007, panting, polystyrene based sculpture

I want to stray away from the idea of a rectangular canvas though. I want to create something that stands alone without the restriction of a frame. I like the way Ohtata's pieces break out of the rectangle and I want to try and push that idea.

This is a 3D canvas that I started on. I have not yet decided what to paint on it.

Painting 2: Post 4

When I ran into obstacles on my 3D painting, I decided to step away and create a simple intuitive piece that would allow me to work quickly without worrying too much about concepts or imagery choice. I focused on line, shape, and color choices.

This is the start of a 3D canvas that I am going to be painting soon. I am working on ideas for what to put on them. I like the way architectural images look on the 3D surfaces but I also enjoy painting figures on them.

Painting 2: Post 3

After completing assignment number five where we had to modify a classmate's painting, we were set out to explore our own interests and create paintings without assigned criteria. This is both liberating, and a little but daunting due to the required creativity involved. Sometimes it is easier when given a direction to make something worth while. Coming up with a good direction is sometimes the hardest part.

Some of my interests this semester have included geometric shapes, and 3D protruding objects from the painting surface. I have made a few paintings this way for BA and did the building this way when modifying my classmate's work.

I have a start on a painting of this style but am running into some issues with painting style and how to make it all make sense. This is the started painting:

Painting 2: Post 2

Assignment 1
We Were supposed to paint a relationship in which there is a sense of tension. I decided to paint myself and my boss at work.

 Assignment 2
This painting shows the ideal habitat of the tiger on the left and what the future holds on the right due to mankind.

Assignment 3
This painting is intended to have a sense of irony in the placement of advertising and article.

Assignment 4
Randomness was my motivation behind this painting.

Assignment 5
For this assignment we were to modify a classmate's painting by changing 50% of the original image. Here is a picture of what the original looked like:

I added on these 3d wooden structures to give the painting a new look while staying true to the original idea.

Painting 2: Post 1

The semester is halfway through and it is time to move on to self guided assignments. This is both exciting because we now get creative freedom, and somewhat daunting because we must come up with ideas that will be fresh and innovative. The pressure to stay motivated gets raised even higher.

Recently I have been interested in geometry, the past, and family. I have really enjoyed working with old family photos and creating grids to translate them onto the canvas and not worrying about erasing the grid because it reveals the process of making the painting. I think it becomes more personal that way. I have also been really interested in creating 3D wooden surfaces to paint on. I am currently working on a few of these paintings.

For the self guided portion of Painting II I want to create a series of paintings based from old family photographs that are both meaningful to myself because of the personal connection with the images and people portrayed, and also make them meaningful and relatable to viewers who do not know the situations of figures shown. I want to do this by choosing images of common events that most people will have experienced at some point in life and be able to connect with. I will also try keeping the figures ambiguous enough to where the viewer can project their own relationships into the imagery.
