Painting 2: Post 8

I finally finished my pixelated painting of my grandpa. I decided to ditch the exact pixels that I generated in photoshop and instead create my own pixels based off those from the computer. I am pretty happy with how this one turned out. It is a nice little painting.

This is what I decided on for the 3D triangle shape I made. I am not entirely sold on this being finished but it is complete for the time being. I like the way the tone gradient looks on the different planes of the shape.

This is the direction I decided to go on with the texture study piece. It was going to be a painting of Audrey Hepburn, but I think I am going to go over it and continue in the abstract direction. I don't like the way the texture works with the figure. Also the shape is too strange for a portrait I think.

I started to lay out what I thought might look cool on this one. It is a scene from an old photo of my brothers playing baseball with my grandma. But I decided the image is not the right fit for this surface. So I am going to try and find something to better match it.

I decided to do a painting of the online comedy rapper Flynt Flossy on my latest 3D canvas. My friend talked me into it because we have been watching his videos a lot in the studio. It seemed like a fun light hearted painting idea so I decided to go for it.

Here is an in progress shot of the painting with my reference material.

And here is the finished piece. This painting actually went really quick. I think it is partially because I had fun painting it. And it is a pretty simple image.

I am pretty happy with the way it turned out. I posted it onto twitter and tagged Flynt's rap group Turquoise Jeep in it and they retweeted it and put it on their instagram also. It reached 180 likes last I checked.
It was pretty exciting to see my work on the group's account getting lots of attention.

Sara Pedigo showed me another artist named Hilary Wilder. She some paintings that incorporate the space of the gallery they are displayed in and she builds shelves and ads those into her paintings. They show some similarities to the work I have been doing this semester, except I feel like her work is a million times better than mine. She does amazing abstract paintings that look like their own worlds and giant explosions and stuff. They are amazing her use of color is so rich and vivid. http://www.hilarywilder.com/

My work has been coming along okay. There were snags in whether or not I wanted to continue 3D paintings or what to use as subject matter but I still think I want to continue with them. I made this small triangular wood canvas  and a flat wood piece that I put thick paint on as a texture study mostly.

I also built this wooden surface to paint on using small pieces of wood all glued together. I like the textures of the wood and the look of them all pieced together.

Painting 2: Post 5

-I was having trouble trying to figure out which direction I wanted to go in. Whether or not I wanted to continue to work on the 3D surfaces or not. After the critique last week I have decided to continue in the 3D direction. I am almost finished putting together a new surface to paint on. It will be in a triangular shape rather than square. I have gotten a lot of feedback saying that these pieces would look interesting in other shapes so I thought that might help spark more interest in them.
-There is an artist name Shintaro Ohata who does some really nice 3D paintings, where he has the figures done sculpturally in front of painted backgrounds. They are very interesting and look great. I might want to work on something similar to that. http://yukari-art.jp/en/shintaro_ohata_en

I want to stray away from the idea of a rectangular canvas though. I want to create something that stands alone without the restriction of a frame. I like the way Ohtata's pieces break out of the rectangle and I want to try and push that idea.

This is a 3D canvas that I started on. I have not yet decided what to paint on it.
